Welcome to my newsletter on Substack
Hey there 👋 I’m Tim Whalin, a designer by trade and a wannabe comedian pretty much all the time. I’ve spent the last eight years working as a Principal UX Designer at Amazon and I’m also an instructor as the School of Visual Concepts.
Over the last 2 1/2 years, I’ve published a newsletter within Amazon to individuals of all levels and roles. Without promoting it, my blog has grown organically to 5,400 subscribers and over 120,000 views. After being frequently asked (and turning down) asks if I published externally, I’ve finally decided to make the transition. So hello individuals who don’t work at Amazon!
For my internal blog at Amazon, I’ve published on a wide range of topics:
How do I grow my career?
How do I effectively manage up?
How do I get visibility?
How do I overcome imposter syndrome?
How do I manage my time and priorities?
How do I deal with ambiguity?
How do I delegate effectively?
How do you get the most out of 1:1 mentorship and coaching?
How do I avoid being in meetings all day?
How do I effectively structure my writing?
How do I handle urgent requests that randomize my work?
How do I find flow to deliver results faster?
How do I organize a working group?
How do I find and prioritize opportunities to volunteer above and beyond my role?
How do I know what my super powers are?
How do I avoid FOMO at work?
How do I set boundaries at work?
How do I deal with bullying?
I’ll be rewriting many of these posts to share publicly with the world (removing Amazon-related terms and resources) and then publishing new posts about UX design, technology, thriving in the corporate world, and other topics that you ask for.
Will I charge for this blog?
Initially, no. My hope is to build a collection of content that others find value in and to use my blog to help others succeed and be their best selves at work. Over time, I may add a subscription to some of my content and resources as a way to help fund more time and energy behind this.
I hope you’ll join me on this journey.
Tim
